Willard Wolf Memorial Scholarship Awarded to Two Hereford Juniors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Raney Anderson, Canyon City, Ore., was awarded the $2,000 Willard Wolf Memorial Scholarship at the 2023 Western States National Hereford Show in Reno, Nev., Dec. 2. The Wolf Scholarship is given on behalf of the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA) and the Western States Hereford Association.

Anderson is a freshman at the College of Southern Idaho majoring in agriculture. Her career goals are to be an agriculture education teacher, in a rural area, giving back in the same way she benefited growing up. She is a past recipient of a Western States Scholarship given in 2022 and is 12-year member of the National Junior Hereford Association, active in the Oregon Junior Hereford Association and was very involved in her local 4-H and FFA chapters.

During the 2021 Western States National Hereford Show and Sale, a scholarship fund was established through HYFA in honor of Willard Wolf. Wolf had a career spanning more than 33 years with the American Hereford Association, serving as the western region field representative and touched countless lives of people involved with Hereford cattle, even after his retirement. He was instrumental in organizing the show and sale formerly known as the "Nugget" and now the Western States National Hereford Show and Sale. He and his wife Patty were integral in establishing the junior show that is part of the annual event and will celebrate 25 years in 2024. Wolf was respected by those who had the opportunity to know him and through this scholarship his legacy continues in the lives of Hereford youth.

“The foundation is very proud of this year’s scholarship recipients in Reno and the HYFA Board of Directors offers a great deal of thanks to the Western States Hereford Association for helping build HYFA’s scholarship pillar and build our young people for their future careers,” says Amy Cowan, Director of Youth Activities and Foundation for the American Hereford Association.

The Western States Hereford Association awarded a total of $6,000 this year and these scholarships are part of more than $220,000 that was disbursed from HYFA this past year. Applications for the spring HYFA scholarships are due April 1 and Western States Hereford scholarships will open in the fall of 2024 and may be found by visiting herefordyouthfoundation.org.
